Making Piñatex, decorticating pineapple leaves
After the fibre from the pineapple leaves is decorticated and washed the farmers hang it up to dry

Piñatex is a sustainable and eco-friendly textile made from the fibers of pineapple leaves. It is an innovative material that serves as an alternative to leather and other synthetic materials. Piñatex was developed by Dr. Carmen Hijosa, a Spanish designer, who sought to create a sustainable and ethical alternative to traditional leather.

History[edit | edit source]

The development of Piñatex began in the 1990s when Dr. Carmen Hijosa was working in the leather industry in the Philippines. She observed the environmental and ethical issues associated with leather production and sought to find a more sustainable alternative. After years of research and development, Piñatex was officially launched in 2015 by the company Ananas Anam, founded by Dr. Hijosa.

Production Process[edit | edit source]

Piñatex is made from the fibers of pineapple leaves, which are a byproduct of the pineapple harvest. The production process involves several steps:

  1. Harvesting: Pineapple leaves are collected from pineapple plantations.
  2. Decortication: The fibers are extracted from the leaves through a process called decortication.
  3. Purification: The fibers are then washed and purified to remove impurities.
  4. Felting: The purified fibers are felted together to create a non-woven mesh.
  5. Finishing: The mesh is then treated with a proprietary formula to give it the desired texture and durability.

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

Piñatex is considered an environmentally friendly material for several reasons:

  • Waste Reduction: It utilizes pineapple leaves, which are typically discarded as agricultural waste.
  • Low Resource Use: The production process requires less water and energy compared to traditional leather production.
  • Biodegradability: Piñatex is biodegradable, reducing its impact on landfills.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Piñatex is used in a variety of products, including:

Advantages[edit | edit source]

  • Sustainability: Piñatex is a sustainable alternative to leather and synthetic materials.
  • Ethical Production: It supports ethical production practices and provides additional income for pineapple farmers.
  • Versatility: Piñatex can be used in a wide range of applications.
