Pierre Hadot
Pierre Hadot (21 February 1922 – 24 April 2010) was a French philosopher and historian of philosophy, particularly known for his work on ancient philosophy, including the works of Marcus Aurelius, Plotinus, and other Neoplatonists. He is also recognized for his analysis of the concept of philosophy as a way of life.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Pierre Hadot was born in Reims, France. He initially studied for the priesthood but later left the seminary to pursue a career in philosophy. He studied at the Sorbonne and the École Pratique des Hautes Études.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Hadot's academic career was distinguished by his tenure as a professor at the Collège de France, where he held the chair of the History of Hellenistic and Roman Thought. His work focused on the practical aspects of philosophy in antiquity, emphasizing how ancient philosophers lived their philosophies.
Philosophy as a Way of Life[edit | edit source]
One of Hadot's most influential contributions to modern philosophy is his concept of "philosophy as a way of life." He argued that for ancient philosophers, philosophy was not merely a theoretical discipline but a practical one, aimed at transforming the individual's way of being in the world. This idea is explored in his works such as Philosophy as a Way of Life and What is Ancient Philosophy?.
Major Works[edit | edit source]
Some of Hadot's major works include:
- Plotinus or the Simplicity of Vision
- The Inner Citadel: The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius
- Philosophy as a Way of Life
- What is Ancient Philosophy?
