Plainfield is a city in Union County, New Jersey, United States. It was incorporated as a city in 1869 and is part of the New York metropolitan area.

Plainfield was originally formed as a township on April 5, 1847, from portions of Westfield Township, while the area was still part of Essex County. It became part of the newly created Union County on March 19, 1857. Plainfield was incorporated as a city on April 21, 1869, replacing Plainfield Township.

Geography[edit | edit source]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.6 square kilometers, all of which is land. Plainfield is bordered by North Plainfield in Somerset County, South Plainfield in Middlesex County, and Scotch Plains and Fanwood in Union County.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 United States Census, the population of Plainfield was approximately 54,000. The city is known for its diverse community, with a significant number of residents of Hispanic and African American descent.

Education[edit | edit source]

Plainfield is served by the Plainfield Public School District, which includes several elementary schools, middle schools, and Plainfield High School. The city is also home to the Union County College Plainfield Campus.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Plainfield is accessible via the New Jersey Transit system, with train service provided at the Plainfield Station on the Raritan Valley Line. The city is also served by several New Jersey Transit bus routes.

Notable People[edit | edit source]

  • Queen Latifah, rapper, singer, and actress, was born in Newark but raised in East Orange and attended high school in Plainfield.
  • P-Funk, the influential funk music collective, originated in Plainfield.
