Description[edit | edit source]
Planchonella australis is a medium to large-sized evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters in height. The tree has a dense, rounded canopy and a straight trunk with rough, dark brown bark. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and elliptical in shape, measuring about 6-12 cm in length. The flowers are small, white, and fragrant, typically blooming in the spring.
Fruit[edit | edit source]
The fruit of Planchonella australis is a berry, commonly referred to as the black apple. The fruit is round, about 2-4 cm in diameter, and turns dark purple to black when ripe. The flesh is sweet and edible, often consumed by local wildlife and occasionally by humans.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Planchonella australis thrives in subtropical and tropical rainforests, often found in coastal and riverine environments. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to clayey.
Ecological Importance[edit | edit source]
This tree plays a significant role in its ecosystem. It provides habitat and food for various species of birds, mammals, and insects. The fruit is particularly important for frugivorous birds and mammals, which help in seed dispersal.
Uses[edit | edit source]
The wood of Planchonella australis is hard and durable, making it suitable for various woodworking applications. The fruit, although not widely consumed by humans, can be eaten fresh or used in traditional recipes.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
Planchonella australis is not currently listed as a threatened species. However, habitat destruction and land clearing pose potential threats to its natural populations.
