Plantar calcaneal bursitis
Plantar calcaneal bursitis is a medical condition that involves inflammation of the bursa located between the plantar fascia and the calcaneus (heel bone). This condition is often associated with heel pain and difficulty in walking.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Plantar calcaneal bursitis is typically caused by overuse or strain on the foot, particularly in athletes and individuals who are on their feet for extended periods. Other causes include wearing ill-fitting shoes, obesity, and certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The primary symptom of plantar calcaneal bursitis is pain in the heel, particularly when standing or walking. The pain may be sharp or dull, and it may worsen with activity. Other symptoms include swelling, redness, and warmth in the heel area.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of plantar calcaneal bursitis is typically made through a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasound may also be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for plantar calcaneal bursitis typically involves rest, ice, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy exercises may also be recommended to strengthen the foot and ankle muscles. In severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Prevention of plantar calcaneal bursitis involves wearing properly fitting shoes, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding activities that put excessive strain on the feet. Regular stretching and strengthening exercises for the feet and ankles can also help prevent this condition.
