Planted karuka

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Planted Karuka is a term used to describe the cultivation of the Karuka tree, a species of plant native to the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The Karuka tree, scientifically known as Pandanus julianettii, is a significant source of food and income for the local population.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

The cultivation of the Karuka tree, or Planted Karuka, is a traditional practice in Papua New Guinea. The tree is typically grown in home gardens and is propagated through the planting of suckers. The tree is well-adapted to the highland environment, and can grow in a variety of soil types.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The primary use of the Karuka tree is for its edible nuts, which are a staple food source for the local population. The nuts are typically harvested between the months of May and August. In addition to being consumed locally, the nuts are also sold in markets, providing a source of income for many families.

The leaves of the Karuka tree are also used in traditional Papuan crafts, such as basket weaving. The tree's wood is used in construction and for making tools.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Despite its importance, the Karuka tree is under threat from deforestation and changes in traditional farming practices. Efforts are being made to conserve the tree and promote sustainable farming practices.
