Plasma (in biology)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

In the field of biology, the term 'plasma' refers to various fluid substances within organisms. It holds a crucial role in the body's function and structure. The primary areas where plasma is found include blood (as blood plasma), semen (as seminal plasma), and within cells (as cytoplasm).

Blood Plasma[edit | edit source]

Blood plasma is the liquid component of blood in which blood cells (red cells, white cells) and platelets are suspended. It makes up approximately 55% of total blood volume and is composed predominantly of water (about 90%), with dissolved proteins, glucose, clotting factors, electrolytes, hormones, and carbon dioxide.

Blood plasma acts as a transport medium for delivering essential substances like nutrients and oxygen to the body's cells and transporting waste products away. It also helps maintain blood pressure and volume, and it serves as a medium for exchange of vital minerals such as sodium and potassium, thus helping maintain a proper pH balance in the body.

Seminal Plasma[edit | edit source]

The fluid component of semen, known as seminal plasma, is produced by the accessory glands, including the seminal vesicles, the prostate, and the bulbo-urethral glands. It serves as a transport medium for sperm during ejaculation, providing them with the necessary nutrients for survival and facilitating their movement. Seminal plasma also contains enzymes, proteins, and other substances that help to prepare the female reproductive tract for conception and aid in sperm transport and fertilization.

Cytoplasm[edit | edit source]

In cellular biology, 'plasma' refers to the cell substance outside the nucleus, also known as the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that contains the cell's organelles, such as the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus, among others. It plays a vital role in cell metabolism as many enzymatic reactions occur within it. The cytoplasm is also involved in cell division and the cell's response to environmental stimuli.
