Plaza de Toros de Pamplona
Plaza de Toros de Pamplona is a bullring located in Pamplona, Navarre, Spain. It is one of the most famous bullrings in the world, primarily known for its association with the annual San Fermín festival, which features the renowned Running of the Bulls.
History[edit | edit source]
The Plaza de Toros de Pamplona was inaugurated on July 7, 1922. The construction of the bullring was necessitated by the growing popularity of the San Fermín festival and the increasing number of spectators. The original structure was designed by the architect Francisco Urcola and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years to accommodate more visitors and improve safety standards.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The bullring is an example of traditional Spanish architecture, featuring a circular arena surrounded by tiered seating. The structure is made primarily of stone and concrete, with a capacity to hold approximately 19,720 spectators. The arena itself is covered with sand, providing a suitable surface for the bullfighting events.
San Fermín Festival[edit | edit source]
The Plaza de Toros de Pamplona is most famous for its role in the San Fermín festival, held annually from July 6 to July 14. The festival includes a variety of events, but the highlight is the Running of the Bulls, where participants run in front of a group of bulls through the streets of Pamplona to the bullring. The event culminates in bullfights held in the Plaza de Toros each evening.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

It has been immortalized in literature, most notably in Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises, which brought international attention to the San Fermín festival and the bullring. The bullring is also a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of Pamplona and Navarre.
Events and Activities[edit | edit source]
In addition to bullfighting, the Plaza de Toros de Pamplona hosts a variety of other events throughout the year, including concerts, cultural festivals, and sporting events. The venue is also open for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the history and architecture of the bullring.
