Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 1769 by Manuel Sepúlveda, it is one of the most important cultural, political, and economic centers in southern Brazil. The city is located on the eastern shore of the Guaíba River, where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos, a huge freshwater lagoon navigable by even the largest of ships.
