Postmillennialism
Postmillennialism is a eschatological view that interprets the Book of Revelation's millennium as a period of peace and righteousness on earth, which will be followed by the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. This view contrasts with premillennialism and amillennialism.
Beliefs[edit | edit source]
Postmillennialism holds that the Kingdom of God is currently being extended in the world through the preaching of the Gospel and the saving work of the Holy Spirit. This process will continue until the world is Christianized, resulting in a long period of peace and righteousness, often referred to as the millennium. After this period, Christ will return to judge the living and the dead.
Historical Development[edit | edit source]
Postmillennialism gained prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly among Puritans and other Reformed groups. It was a dominant view among American Protestants in the 19th century, influencing movements such as the Second Great Awakening and the Social Gospel.
Key Figures[edit | edit source]
Prominent proponents of postmillennialism include:
Criticisms[edit | edit source]
Critics of postmillennialism argue that it is overly optimistic about the progress of the Gospel and the moral improvement of humanity. They often point to the persistence of evil and suffering in the world as evidence against the postmillennial view.
Comparison with Other Views[edit | edit source]
- Premillennialism: Believes that Christ will return before the millennium to establish a literal thousand-year reign on earth.
- Amillennialism: Interprets the millennium symbolically and believes that it represents the current church age, with no future thousand-year reign.
Influence[edit | edit source]
Postmillennialism has influenced various social and political movements, particularly those advocating for social reform and justice. Its optimistic outlook has inspired efforts to improve society in anticipation of Christ's return.
