Postum
Postum is a powdered roasted grain beverage often used as a coffee substitute. The caffeine-free beverage was created by Post Cereal Company founder C.W. Post in 1895 and is currently manufactured by Eliza's Quest Foods of Charlotte, North Carolina.
History[edit | edit source]
C.W. Post, a pioneer of the packaged food industry, developed Postum as a healthful alternative to coffee. He launched the product in 1895, marketing it as a beverage that could aid digestion and promote sleep. Postum quickly gained popularity and became a staple in many American households.
In 2007, Kraft Foods discontinued the production of Postum, citing low consumer demand. However, in 2012, Eliza's Quest Foods reintroduced Postum, continuing the legacy of the beloved beverage.
Preparation and Use[edit | edit source]
Postum is made by mixing the powder with hot water, creating a warm, comforting beverage. It can be enjoyed plain or with added milk and sugar. Some people also use Postum as a flavoring in baked goods.
Health Benefits[edit | edit source]
As a caffeine-free beverage, Postum is often chosen by those looking to reduce their caffeine intake. It is also free from tannic acid, a compound found in coffee and tea that can cause stomach irritation in some individuals.
