Pott (rum)
Pott (rum) is a type of rum that is traditionally produced in Germany. It is named after the city of Flensburg, where the Pott distillery was founded in 1846. Pott rum is made from sugar cane and is typically aged in oak barrels for a period of time to enhance its flavor.
History[edit | edit source]
The Pott distillery was established by Heinrich Pott, a German businessman, in 1846. The distillery was initially located in the city of Flensburg, in the northernmost part of Germany. The Pott distillery quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality rum, and it became one of the most popular brands of rum in Germany.
In the early 20th century, the Pott distillery was acquired by the Borco-Marken-Import company, which continues to produce Pott rum to this day. The distillery has since been relocated to Hamburg, but the rum is still made according to the original recipe.
Production[edit | edit source]
Pott rum is made from sugar cane, which is fermented and then distilled to produce a clear, high-proof spirit. This spirit is then aged in oak barrels for a period of time, which gives the rum its distinctive flavor and color.
The aging process for Pott rum is typically longer than for other types of rum, which results in a more complex flavor profile. The rum is often described as having notes of caramel, vanilla, and spice.
Varieties[edit | edit source]
There are several varieties of Pott rum available, including Pott 40, Pott 54, and Pott 80. These numbers refer to the alcohol content of the rum, with Pott 40 being the least potent and Pott 80 being the most potent.
In addition to these standard varieties, Pott also produces a number of special editions and limited releases. These often feature unique flavor profiles or are aged for longer periods of time.
Consumption[edit | edit source]
Pott rum is typically consumed neat or on the rocks, but it can also be used as a base for various cocktails. Some popular cocktails that feature Pott rum include the Rum Old Fashioned, the Rum Sour, and the Rum Punch.
