Powerade Tigers
Powerade Tigers were a professional basketball team that competed in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the premier basketball league in the Philippines. The team was owned by Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc., a subsidiary of the global beverage company, Coca-Cola. The Powerade Tigers were known for their competitive spirit and had a significant fan base during their tenure in the league.
History[edit | edit source]
The franchise began its PBA journey in 2002, initially known as the Coca-Cola Tigers. Over the years, the team underwent several name changes, reflecting the branding strategies of its parent company. It was in 2011 that the team was rebranded as the Powerade Tigers, aligning with Coca-Cola's sports drink brand, Powerade.
During their time in the PBA, the Powerade Tigers experienced various degrees of success. One of the highlights of their tenure was reaching the PBA Finals during the 2011-2012 Philippine Cup, where they showcased remarkable determination and skill. Despite their efforts, the team fell short of securing the championship, losing to the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters.
Notable Players[edit | edit source]
The Powerade Tigers roster featured several notable players who made significant contributions to the team's success. Among these were Gary David, a prolific scorer known for his sharpshooting abilities, and Marcio Lassiter, a versatile player who excelled in both offense and defense. These players, among others, were instrumental in the team's memorable runs in the PBA.
Disbandment[edit | edit source]
In 2012, the franchise underwent a major change when the Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. decided to sell the team. The PBA approved the sale of the Powerade Tigers to the San Miguel Corporation, leading to the creation of a new team, the GlobalPort Batang Pier. This marked the end of the Powerade Tigers' journey in the PBA, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and passion for the game.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The Powerade Tigers are remembered for their fighting spirit and the excitement they brought to the PBA. Their journey in the league, though relatively short-lived, made a lasting impact on their fans and the Philippine basketball community. The team's history serves as a testament to the dynamic nature of professional sports, where change is a constant, and resilience is key.
