Powerlifter
Powerlifter
A powerlifter is an athlete who competes in the sport of powerlifting, which involves three main lifts: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. Powerlifting is a strength sport that focuses on maximal strength in these three lifts, and competitions are held to determine the strongest lifters in various weight classes.
History[edit | edit source]
Powerlifting originated in the mid-20th century, evolving from weightlifting and strongman competitions. The first official powerlifting competitions were held in the 1960s, and the sport has grown in popularity since then. The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) was founded in 1972 and is the governing body for international competitions.
Rules and Regulations[edit | edit source]
Powerlifting competitions are governed by strict rules to ensure fairness and safety. Each lifter is allowed three attempts at each lift, and the best successful attempt is counted towards their total score. The lifter with the highest total in their weight class is declared the winner.
Squat[edit | edit source]
The squat requires the lifter to lower their hips below the level of their knees and then return to a standing position. The lift is judged on depth and control.
Bench Press[edit | edit source]
In the bench press, the lifter must lower the bar to their chest and then press it upwards until their arms are fully extended. The lift is judged on control and lockout.
Deadlift[edit | edit source]
The deadlift involves lifting the barbell from the ground to a standing position with the hips and knees locked. The lift is judged on control and completion.
Training[edit | edit source]
Powerlifters follow specialized training programs that focus on building strength in the three main lifts. Training often includes variations of the main lifts, accessory exercises, and periodization to optimize performance.
Equipment[edit | edit source]
Powerlifters use specific equipment to enhance performance and safety, including:
- Belts
- Knee wraps or sleeves
- Wrist wraps

Competitions[edit | edit source]
Powerlifting competitions are held at local, national, and international levels. The IPF World Championships is one of the most prestigious events in the sport. Competitions are divided into weight classes and age categories.
