Preputioplasty
Preputioplasty is a medical procedure that is performed to widen the foreskin in males. It is often used as an alternative to circumcision when treating conditions such as phimosis. The procedure involves making a small incision in the foreskin and then stitching it in a way that widens the opening.
Procedure[edit | edit source]
The preputioplasty procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a longitudinal incision along the constricting band of the foreskin, or multiple incisions if necessary. The incisions are then stitched transversely, which widens the foreskin opening.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Preputioplasty is often indicated for males who have phimosis, a condition where the foreskin cannot be fully retracted over the head of the penis. It can also be used in cases where the patient or their family prefers a less invasive procedure than circumcision.
Benefits[edit | edit source]
The main benefit of preputioplasty is that it preserves the foreskin, which some people prefer for cultural, religious, or personal reasons. It is also a less invasive procedure than circumcision, with a shorter recovery time.
Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]
As with any surgical procedure, preputioplasty carries some risks. These can include infection, bleeding, and scarring. There is also a chance that the procedure may not be successful in fully resolving the phimosis, and further treatment may be needed.
