Procaine benzylpenicillin
Procaine benzylpenicillin is a form of penicillin, which is a type of antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is also known as penicillin G procaine.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Procaine benzylpenicillin is a slow-onset antibiotic that is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. It is a type of penicillin, which is a group of antibiotics that includes penicillin G (intravenous use), penicillin V (oral use), procaine penicillin, and benzathine penicillin (intramuscular use).
Medical Uses[edit | edit source]
Procaine benzylpenicillin is used to treat a wide range of infections caused by bacteria, including Streptococci and Staphylococci species. It is also used in the prevention of rheumatic fever and bacterial endocarditis.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medicines, procaine benzylpenicillin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some common side effects include allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects like anaphylaxis.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Procaine benzylpenicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins located inside the bacterial cell wall, causing the inhibition of the transpeptidase enzyme. This leads to cell lysis and death.
