The Profunda Femoris Vein (Deep Femoral Vein) is a large vein located in the thigh. It is a major component of the venous system in the lower limb, responsible for draining blood from the deep structures of the thigh.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Profunda Femoris Vein originates from the femoral vein, running deep in the thigh alongside the profunda femoris artery. It receives blood from several tributaries, including the medial circumflex femoral vein and the lateral circumflex femoral vein.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the Profunda Femoris Vein is to drain deoxygenated blood from the deep muscles and structures of the thigh, returning it to the heart via the femoral vein and the inferior vena cava.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its location, the Profunda Femoris Vein can be involved in various medical conditions, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and varicose veins. Understanding its anatomy is crucial for medical procedures involving the lower limb, including surgery and angiography.
