Propaganda
Propaganda is a form of communication that is used to influence the attitude of a community towards some cause or position. It is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the desired result in audience attitudes.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Propaganda is information that is not objective and is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is presented.
History[edit | edit source]
The term propaganda originated from the new administrative body the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide), founded in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV.
Types of Propaganda[edit | edit source]
There are many different types of propaganda, including:
- Black Propaganda
- White Propaganda
- Gray Propaganda
- Propaganda of the deed
- Atrocity Propaganda
- Bandwagon Propaganda
- Fear Propaganda
Techniques[edit | edit source]
Propaganda shares techniques with advertising and public relations, each of which can be thought of as propaganda that promotes a commercial product or shapes the perception of an organization, person, or brand.
