Purfleet-on-Thames (formerly known as Purfleet) is a town in the Thurrock unitary authority in Essex, England. It is located on the north bank of the River Thames and is historically significant for its role in the British military and maritime history.

Purfleet-on-Thames has a rich history dating back to the Roman times. The town's name is believed to be derived from the Old English words 'purk' and 'fleot', meaning a creek where pigs were kept.

In the 18th century, Purfleet-on-Thames became a significant military and maritime site. The Royal Gunpowder Magazine was established here in 1765 as a location for the storage of gunpowder along with a garrison to protect it. The magazine closed in 1961.

Purfleet-on-Thames is located in the county of Essex, on the north bank of the River Thames. It is part of the Thurrock unitary authority. The town is surrounded by the larger towns of Grays and Dartford.
