Pyrvinium
Pyrvinium is a quinoline derivative that is used as an anthelmintic agent, primarily for the treatment of pinworm infections. Pinworms, or Enterobius vermicularis, are a common type of intestinal parasite. Pyrvinium works by inhibiting the cellular respiration of the worms, leading to their death. It is most commonly administered in the form of pyrvinium pamoate, a salt form that is not well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, thus exerting its effect mainly within the intestine.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Pyrvinium inhibits the ATP production in the mitochondria of the parasites by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. This leads to an energy deficit, immobilizing and eventually killing the parasite. The drug has a selective toxicity to the worms due to its poor absorption in the human host, which minimizes systemic effects.

Due to its formulation as pyrvinium pamoate, pyrvinium is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which confines its action to the intestinal lumen. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for treating intestinal worm infections without significant systemic exposure, thereby reducing potential side effects.

Pyrvinium is primarily indicated for the treatment of pinworm infections. The treatment regimen typically involves a single dose, which may be repeated after a specified interval to ensure eradication of the infection.
