Queens Community Board 1

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Queens Community Board 1 is a local government body in the New York City borough of Queens, responsible for land use and zoning, municipal service delivery, and community concerns in a local area. The board encompasses the neighborhoods of Astoria, Old Astoria, Long Island City, Queensbridge, Ravenswood, Dutch Kills, Blissville, Sunnyside, and Woodside. It is delimited by the East River on the west and north, and by Hobart Street, Ditmars Boulevard, and Northern Boulevard on the east and south.

History[edit | edit source]

The establishment of community boards in New York City was a result of the 1975 revision of the New York City Charter, which aimed to improve democratic control over local resources and services. Queens Community Board 1, like other community boards, was created to advise on land use and zoning matters, contribute to the city budget process, and address community concerns.

Structure and Function[edit | edit source]

Queens Community Board 1 is composed of up to 50 volunteer members appointed by the Queens Borough President, half from nominations by City Council members representing the community district. The board has a small paid district office staff and is headed by a district manager, who is responsible for running the district office and overseeing the delivery of city services.

The board meets once a month, where members hear presentations from government officials, developers, and community groups about proposed changes in the district. The board also has committees that focus on specific issues such as land use, transportation, and public safety.

Community District[edit | edit source]

The community district represented by Queens Community Board 1 is designated as Queens CD 1 by the New York City Department of City Planning. The district has a diverse population, with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. It is home to several notable landmarks, including the Museum of the Moving Image, Socrates Sculpture Park, and the Noguchi Museum.
