RPL18A

RPL18A is a gene that encodes the ribosomal protein L18a in humans. Ribosomal proteins, such as L18a, are essential components of ribosomes, the cellular structures responsible for protein synthesis. RPL18A is part of the large 60S ribosomal subunit and plays a critical role in the assembly and function of the ribosome, facilitating the accurate translation of mRNA into protein.

The RPL18A gene is located on chromosome 6 in humans. Its expression is tightly regulated, ensuring the proper production of the L18a protein, which is necessary for the efficient and accurate translation of genetic information. Mutations or alterations in the expression of RPL18A can have significant implications for cellular function and may contribute to the development of various diseases, including cancer and disorders related to ribosome biogenesis.

In the context of ribosomopathies, diseases caused by defects in ribosomal proteins or ribosome assembly, RPL18A may be a gene of interest due to its fundamental role in ribosome function. Research into RPL18A and its protein product contributes to a broader understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying protein synthesis and its impact on cellular health and disease.
