Railroad switch (also known as a train switch, railway turnout, or points) is a mechanical installation enabling railway trains to be guided from one track to another at a railway junction. This mechanism is pivotal in the management and operation of rail networks, allowing for the flexible routing of trains across complex track systems.

A railroad switch consists of a pair of linked tapering rails, known as switch rails or point blades, located within the railroad track. These movable rails can be shifted to allow a train to either continue on the main track or diverge onto a branching track. The switch rails are connected to a set of ties that support them. The position of the switch is typically controlled manually by a lever, electronically from a remote location, or automatically.
