Rajshahi Division is one of the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is bordered by the Indian states of West Bengal and Jharkhand to the west, the Bangladesh divisions of Rangpur and Mymensingh to the north and northeast, respectively, and the Khulna Division and Dhaka Division to the south. Rajshahi Division is known for its silk industry, mangoes, and archaeological sites, making it an important region both economically and culturally.

Rajshahi Division covers an area of approximately 34,513 square kilometers, making it the larger than some of the other divisions of Bangladesh but smaller than others like Chittagong Division. The region features a diverse landscape that includes river valleys, ancient hills, and fertile plains. Major rivers flowing through this division include the Padma River, Jamuna River, and Mahasthan River, which are crucial for the region's agriculture and transportation.

Rajshahi Division is subdivided into eight districts (Zilas), which are further divided into upazilas (sub-districts) and then into union councils. The districts are:

In addition to agriculture and silk, the division has a growing information technology sector and several industrial parks aimed at diversifying the local economy.

Rajshahi Division is rich in cultural heritage and history, with numerous archaeological sites, including the ancient ruins of Mahasthangarh and the Paharpur Buddhist Vihara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The division also hosts various cultural festivals, particularly those related to the harvesting of mangoes and silk production.

Rajshahi is home to several prestigious educational institutions, including the University of Rajshahi and the Rajshahi Medical College. These institutions play a crucial role in the educational development of the region and the country.

The division is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The Rajshahi Airport offers domestic flights, while the extensive road and railway networks facilitate easy movement of people and goods within the division and to other parts of Bangladesh.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

Despite its economic and cultural significance, Rajshahi Division faces several challenges, including climate change impacts, such as flooding and river erosion, and economic issues like unemployment and poverty. Efforts are ongoing to address these challenges through infrastructure development, educational improvements, and economic diversification.
