Ramon Guiteras
Ramon Guiteras (1858–1917) was a pioneering American urologist and one of the founding members of the American Urological Association (AUA). He is widely recognized for his contributions to the field of urology and for his efforts in establishing urology as a distinct medical specialty.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ramon Guiteras was born in 1858 in New York City. He pursued his medical education at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, where he earned his medical degree in 1881. Following his graduation, Guiteras completed his internship and residency at the New York Hospital.

Guiteras began his medical career as a general surgeon but soon developed a keen interest in urology. He traveled to Europe to study under prominent urologists of the time, including Felix Guyon in Paris and Maximilian Nitze in Berlin. Upon his return to the United States, Guiteras dedicated himself to the advancement of urology.
In 1902, Guiteras was instrumental in founding the American Urological Association, serving as its first president. The AUA was established to promote the study and practice of urology and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among urologists.
