Ranson

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ranson's criteria are a clinical prediction rule for predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis. They were introduced in 1974 by the American surgeon Charles Gardner Ranson.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Ranson's criteria are used to predict the prognosis and severity of acute pancreatitis. If the score ≥ 3, severe pancreatitis likely. If the score < 3, severe pancreatitis is unlikely. If the score > 7, high probability of severe pancreatitis.

Criteria[edit | edit source]

The criteria are:

  • Age in years > 55 years
  • White blood cell count > 16,000 cells/mm³
  • Blood glucose > 200 mg/dL
  • Serum AST > 250 IU/L
  • Serum LDH > 350 IU/L

Scoring[edit | edit source]

The score is calculated based on 11 factors, with 1 point awarded for each positive factor. The factors are divided into two groups: those that are measured at admission, and those that are measured at 48 hours.
