Raphaelle Peale
Raphaelle Peale (1774–1825) was an American painter best known for his still life paintings. He was the eldest son of the renowned artist Charles Willson Peale and brother of artists Rembrandt Peale, Rubens Peale, and Titian Peale. Raphaelle Peale's work represents a significant chapter in the history of the American art and the American still life tradition.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Raphaelle Peale was born in Annapolis, Maryland, on February 17, 1774. He was trained by his father, Charles Willson Peale, who was a prominent portrait painter in the United States at the time. Raphaelle showed an early interest in art and began his career painting portraits.
Career[edit | edit source]
Raphaelle Peale is considered the first professional American still life painter. His works often depicted simple, everyday objects, such as fruit, vegetables, and meat. His painting style was characterized by a delicate touch and a keen eye for detail. His most famous painting, "Venus Rising from the Sea—A Deception" (1822), is considered a masterpiece of American still life.
Personal Life and Death[edit | edit source]
Raphaelle Peale married Martha (Patty) McGlathery in 1797. They had eight children, but only two survived to adulthood. Peale struggled with alcoholism and poor health throughout his life. He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 4, 1825.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Raphaelle Peale's work has had a lasting impact on American art. His attention to detail and his ability to imbue everyday objects with a sense of beauty and importance have influenced generations of artists. His paintings are held in many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art.
