Ratched is an American psychological thriller television series created by Evan Romansky and developed by Ryan Murphy. The series is a prequel to the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. It stars Sarah Paulson as the titular character, Nurse Ratched, a character who was originally portrayed by Louise Fletcher in the 1975 film adaptation of the novel.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The series follows Nurse Ratched in 1947 as she begins working at a leading psychiatric hospital in Northern California. The story explores her journey from a seemingly dedicated nurse to a full-fledged monster as she manipulates and exploits the mental health care system and the patients within it.

Cast and Characters[edit | edit source]

The series was announced in September 2017, with Netflix ordering two seasons. Ryan Murphy and Sarah Paulson were attached to the project from the beginning. Filming took place in various locations in California, including the historic Arrowhead Springs Hotel in San Bernardino.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Ratched received mixed reviews from critics. While Sarah Paulson's performance was widely praised, some critics felt the series lacked the depth and nuance of the original novel and film. The show's visual style and production design were also highlighted as strong points.
