Raymond McCartney (born 29 November 1954) is an Irish politician and former IRA volunteer. He is a member of Sinn Féin and has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Foyle.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Raymond McCartney was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. He grew up in the Bogside area, a neighborhood known for its significant role in the Troubles.

Involvement in the IRA[edit | edit source]

McCartney joined the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the early 1970s. He was arrested and convicted for his involvement in IRA activities. McCartney participated in the 1980 hunger strike in the Maze Prison, also known as Long Kesh.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

After his release from prison, McCartney became actively involved in politics through Sinn Féin. He was elected as an MLA for Foyle in the 2004 Assembly election. During his tenure, he has focused on issues such as justice, human rights, and the legacy of the Troubles.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Raymond McCartney is married and has children. He continues to reside in Derry and remains active in community and political affairs.
