Redpath Sugar
Redpath Sugar[edit | edit source]
Redpath Sugar is a Canadian sugar refining company that has been in operation since 1854. It is one of the oldest companies in Canada and has played a significant role in the country's history. The company was founded by John Redpath, an immigrant from Scotland, and has since grown to become a major player in the global sugar industry.
History[edit | edit source]
John Redpath founded Redpath Sugar in 1854 in Montreal, Quebec. He had previously worked in the construction industry, helping to build the Lachine Canal, before deciding to start his own sugar refining business. The company quickly grew and by the 1860s, it was one of the largest sugar refineries in Canada.
In the early 20th century, Redpath Sugar expanded its operations, opening refineries in other parts of Canada and in the United States. The company also began to diversify its product line, introducing new types of sugar and other sweeteners.
Products[edit | edit source]
Redpath Sugar produces a wide range of sugar products, including granulated sugar, brown sugar, icing sugar, and specialty sugars. The company also produces a line of organic sugars, which are made from cane sugar that has been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
Sustainability[edit | edit source]
Redpath Sugar is committed to sustainability and has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. These include energy efficiency measures, waste reduction programs, and efforts to source sustainable raw materials.
Redpath Sugar Museum[edit | edit source]
The Redpath Sugar Museum is located at the company's refinery in Toronto. It is one of the few industrial museums in Canada and offers visitors a chance to learn about the history of sugar and the sugar refining process.
