Reduced

Reduced refers to a state or condition in which a substance has been diminished or decreased in some way, often in the context of chemical reactions. For instance, the process of cellular respiration involves a series of redox reactions in which glucose and other molecules are oxidized to produce carbon dioxide and water, while oxygen is reduced to form water. This process releases energy, which is used to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main energy currency of the cell.

Environmental Reduction

In environmental science, reduction processes play a key role in the cycling of nutrients and other elements through the environment. For example, in the nitrogen cycle, certain bacteria are able to reduce atmospheric nitrogen to a form that can be used by plants. This process, known as nitrogen fixation, is crucial for the productivity of ecosystems.
