Redwood City is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. It is situated on the San Francisco Peninsula, about 27 miles (43 kilometers) south of San Francisco and 24 miles (39 kilometers) northwest of San Jose. With a population of approximately 85,928 as of 2020, Redwood City is the third most populous city in the county.

Redwood City was originally inhabited by the Ohlone Native Americans. The area was explored by Spanish explorers in the 18th century and later became part of Mexico. In 1851, a settlement was established and named "Redwood City" due to the abundance of redwood trees in the area. The city was officially incorporated in 1867.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Redwood City covers a total area of 50.3 square kilometers, including both land and water. It is bordered by the cities of San Carlos to the northwest, Belmont to the northeast, and Menlo Park to the southwest. The city is located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, providing beautiful waterfront views.

Redwood City has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The city experiences an average of 20 inches (510 millimeters) of rainfall annually, primarily occurring between November and April. Summers are typically dry, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29 degrees Celsius).

Redwood City has a diverse economy with a mix of industries. The city is home to several technology companies, including Oracle, EA, and Box. The downtown area features a vibrant business district with numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
