Remikiren

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Remikiren is a renin inhibitor used in the treatment of hypertension. It is a synthetic peptide derivative, and its chemical name is (2S,4S,5S,7S)-5-amino-4-hydroxy-2,7-diisopropyl-8-[4-(4-pyridinyl)phenyl]octanamide.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Remikiren works by inhibiting the enzyme renin, which is involved in the RAS system. The RAS system regulates blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. By inhibiting renin, Remikiren reduces the production of angiotensin II and aldosterone, two hormones that constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Remikiren is used in the treatment of hypertension. It is usually prescribed when other antihypertensive medications, such as ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers, are not effective or cause intolerable side effects.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

The most common side effects of Remikiren include dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rare but serious side effects include hypotension, hyperkalemia, and kidney failure.
