Richard A. Walker is a renowned geographer and professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his extensive research and publications on economic geography, urban studies, and California's geography. His work has significantly contributed to the understanding of the economic and social dynamics of urban regions, particularly in the context of California and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Richard A. Walker was born in the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University, where he developed an interest in geography. He later pursued his graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, earning a Ph.D. in Geography.

Walker joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, in the Department of Geography. His research focused on various aspects of economic geography, urban studies, and the geography of California. He has published numerous articles and books on these topics, contributing significantly to the field.

Among his notable works is "The Capitalist Imperative: Territory, Technology and Industrial Growth" (1989), co-authored with Michael Storper. This book is considered a seminal work in the field of economic geography. Another significant publication is "The New Social Economy: Reworking the Division of Labor" (1992), which he co-edited with Andrew Sayer.

Walker's research on the geography of California has resulted in several influential publications, including "The Conquest of Bread: 150 Years of Agribusiness in California" (2004) and "The Country in the City: The Greening of the San Francisco Bay Area" (2007).

Walker's contributions to the field of geography have been recognized with several awards. He is a recipient of the Association of American Geographers' Distinguished Scholarship Honors and the Vautrin Lud Prize, often considered the "Nobel Prize of Geography".
