Richard Shope

Richard Edwin Shope (September 25, 1901 – July 9, 1966) was an American virologist known for his significant contributions to the field of veterinary medicine. He is particularly renowned for his discovery of the first animal virus, the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV), in 1929. This groundbreaking discovery marked a pivotal moment in the understanding of viral diseases in animals.

Shope was born on September 25, 1901, in Des Moines, Iowa. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State College in 1923. He then pursued his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1926.

After completing his doctoral studies, Shope joined the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) in New York City. It was during his time at the institute that he made his groundbreaking discovery of the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus in 1929. This discovery not only established Shope as a pioneer in virology but also laid the foundation for further research into animal viruses.

Shope's research extended beyond RHDV, and he made significant contributions to the study of other animal viruses, including the Shope Papilloma Virus. His work significantly advanced the understanding of viral diseases in animals and their implications for both veterinary and human health.
