Richard Whiteley (28 December 1943 – 26 June 2005) was a British television presenter and journalist, best known for his long-running role as the host of the popular quiz show Countdown. Born in Bradford, Whiteley began his career as a journalist before transitioning to television presenting.

Whiteley was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England on 28 December 1943. He attended Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, before studying at Christ's College, Cambridge. After graduating, he worked as a journalist for various newspapers and radio stations.

Television Career[edit | edit source]

Whiteley's television career began in the 1970s when he became the host of the Yorkshire Television program Calendar. He later went on to host the quiz show Countdown, a role he held from the show's inception in 1982 until his death in 2005. Whiteley's warm and affable on-screen persona endeared him to viewers, making him a household name in the UK.

Outside of his television career, Whiteley was known for his philanthropic efforts and support of various charities. He was also an avid cricket fan and served as the president of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
