Riley P. Bechtel
Riley P. Bechtel is an American businessman and the former chairman and CEO of Bechtel Corporation, one of the largest engineering, construction, and project management companies in the world. He is a member of the Bechtel family, which has controlled the company since its founding in 1898.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Riley Peart Bechtel was born on March 25, 1952, in San Francisco, California. He is the son of Stephen D. Bechtel Jr. and the grandson of Warren A. Bechtel, the founder of Bechtel Corporation. Riley Bechtel attended Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and psychology in 1974. He later received a J.D./M.B.A. from Stanford Law School and the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1977.
Career[edit | edit source]
Riley Bechtel joined Bechtel Corporation in 1981, starting in the company's legal department. He quickly rose through the ranks, holding various positions in the company. In 1990, he was named president and chief operating officer, and in 1996, he became chairman and CEO, succeeding his father, Stephen D. Bechtel Jr.
Under Riley Bechtel's leadership, Bechtel Corporation expanded its global presence and diversified its portfolio, taking on major projects in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, mining, and defense. Some notable projects during his tenure include the Channel Tunnel, the Jubail Industrial City in Saudi Arabia, and the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant in Washington State.
Retirement[edit | edit source]
In 2014, Riley Bechtel stepped down as CEO due to health reasons, and Bill Dudley succeeded him. He remained as chairman until 2017, when he retired from the board of directors. Despite his retirement, Riley Bechtel continues to be involved in various philanthropic activities and serves on the boards of several organizations.

Riley Bechtel is married and has three children. He is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the areas of education and healthcare. He has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the National Geographic Society and the Hoover Institution.
