Rio Rancho is the largest city and economic hub of Sandoval County, and part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in New Mexico.

Rio Rancho was originally part of the Albuquerque land grant, which was established in the early 18th century. The area was largely undeveloped until the 1960s when the AMREP Corporation purchased 55,000 acres to create a new community. The city was incorporated in 1981.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Rio Rancho is located in central New Mexico, bordered by the Rio Grande to the east. The city covers a total area of 267.0 square kilometers, with a small portion of water.

As of the 2020 census, Rio Rancho had a population of 104,046. The city has seen significant growth due to its proximity to Albuquerque and its appeal as a suburban community.

The economy of Rio Rancho is diverse, with major employers including Intel Corporation, which operates a large semiconductor manufacturing plant in the city. The presence of Intel has spurred growth in the technology sector and attracted other businesses to the area.
