Rishi Sunak (born 12 May 1980) is a British politician who has served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 25 October 2022. He is a member of the Conservative Party and has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond since 2015.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton, England, to parents of Indian descent who had emigrated from East Africa. His father was a general practitioner, and his mother ran a local pharmacy. Sunak attended Winchester College, a prestigious independent school, where he was head boy. He went on to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University, graduating with a first-class degree. He later earned an MBA from Stanford University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
Business Career[edit | edit source]
Before entering politics, Sunak worked in investment banking and business. He began his career at Goldman Sachs and later worked for hedge fund management firm TCI. He also co-founded an investment firm, Theleme Partners.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Sunak was elected as the MP for Richmond in the 2015 general election, succeeding former Conservative leader William Hague. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Conservative Party, serving in various junior ministerial roles.
Chancellor of the Exchequer[edit | edit source]
In February 2020, Sunak was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following the resignation of Sajid Javid. As Chancellor, Sunak played a key role in the UK government's economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing measures such as the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

Sunak became Prime Minister on 25 October 2022, following the resignation of Liz Truss. His tenure has been marked by efforts to stabilize the UK economy, address the cost of living crisis, and manage the UK's post-Brexit relationship with the European Union.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Rishi Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys. The couple has two daughters. Sunak is known for his interest in technology and innovation, and he has been involved in various philanthropic activities.
