University of Oxford is a collegiate university located in Oxford, England. With evidence of teaching as early as 1096, it is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's second-oldest university in continuous operation.

The University of Oxford has no known foundation date. Teaching at Oxford existed in some form as early as 1096, but it is unclear when a university came into being. It grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II of England banned English students from attending the University of Paris.

Colleges[edit | edit source]

The University of Oxford is made up of 39 constituent colleges, and a range of academic departments which are organised into four divisions. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities.

The University of Oxford is a research university with a strong emphasis on research. It consistently ranks among the world's top universities and is known for its innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. The university is made up of several departments that are organized into four divisions: Humanities, Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

Notable Alumni[edit | edit source]

The University of Oxford has produced a large number of distinguished alumni, including 28 British Prime Ministers, 30 international leaders, 50 Nobel Prize laureates, and 120 Olympic medalists.
