New College (formally, The Warden and Scholars of St Mary's College of Winchester in Oxford) is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, the college is among the oldest at the university and has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence.

New College was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, the Bishop of Winchester, to provide education for clergy. It was one of the first colleges in Oxford to be planned around a quadrangle, a design that has influenced many other colleges. The college was originally called "St Mary's College of Winchester in Oxford," but it became known as "New College" to distinguish it from the older St Mary's College.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The college is renowned for its beautiful and historic architecture. The main quadrangle, known as the Front Quad, is one of the oldest in Oxford. The New College Chapel is a notable example of Gothic architecture and contains a famous organ and a series of stained glass windows.
