Rita Lobato

Rita Lobato Velho Lopes (7 July 1866 – 6 January 1954) was a pioneering Brazilian physician and the first woman to practice medicine in Brazil. Her groundbreaking career paved the way for future generations of women in the medical profession in Brazil and beyond.

Rita Lobato was born in São Gabriel, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. From a young age, she showed a keen interest in the medical field, a passion that was unusual for women in the 19th century. In 1884, she enrolled at the Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia, the oldest medical school in Brazil, located in Salvador, Bahia. Lobato faced considerable opposition and skepticism from both faculty and peers due to her gender. However, her determination and academic excellence won her respect and admiration. In 1887, Rita Lobato graduated with a thesis on "Cesarean Section in Contracted Pelvis," becoming the first woman to earn a medical degree in Brazil.
