River Tam is a fictional character portrayed by actress Summer Glau in the 2005 film Serenity. Created by Joss Whedon, River is a central character in the Firefly franchise.

River Tam is a young woman with exceptional intelligence and psychic abilities. She is the younger sister of Simon Tam, a skilled doctor. River was subjected to experiments and conditioning by the Alliance, which resulted in her displaying erratic behavior and extraordinary combat skills.
