Roald Dahl (13 September 1916 – 23 November 1990) was a British novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and wartime fighter pilot. His books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide. Dahl is best known for his children's stories, which are loved for their unexpected endings, unsentimental, often very dark humor, and the portrayal of adult villains who are often outwitted by child characters. Biography

Born in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents, Dahl served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, where he became a flying ace and intelligence officer, rising to the rank of wing commander. Post-war, he began writing, with his first published work being The Gremlins (1943), aimed at children and commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made.
