Roald Dahl (13 September 1916 – 23 November 1990) was a British novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and wartime fighter pilot. His books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide. Dahl is best known for his children's stories, which are loved for their unexpected endings, unsentimental, often very dark humor, and the portrayal of adult villains who are often outwitted by child characters. Some of his most famous works include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, James and the Giant Peach, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Born in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents, Dahl served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, where he became a flying ace and intelligence officer, rising to the rank of wing commander. Post-war, he began writing, with his first published work being The Gremlins (1943), aimed at children and commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made. Dahl went on to write for both children and adults, gaining significant success.

Children's Literature[edit | edit source]

Dahl's children's books are known for their unsentimental, often macabre or grotesque humor. His stories often feature children facing off against villainous or oppressive adults. Dahl's writing is distinctive for its inventive language and imaginative storylines. His influence on children's literature has been profound, with many of his books adapted into successful films, stage plays, and musicals.

Adult Works[edit | edit source]

In addition to his children's stories, Dahl wrote for adults, primarily in the form of short stories. His adult works often explore themes of betrayal, revenge, and the macabre, with a dark sense of humor. Collections like Kiss Kiss and Switch Bitch are notable examples, showcasing his versatility and skill in storytelling.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Dahl's impact on literature and popular culture is immense. The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden celebrates his life and work. His stories continue to entertain, inspire, and provoke readers of all ages. The annual Roald Dahl Day on 13 September, his birthday, is celebrated worldwide.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Dahl's legacy is also marked by controversy, particularly regarding anti-Semitic statements he made during his lifetime. These have led to re-evaluations of his character and discussions about how to engage with his work in a contemporary context.
