Robert Baird McClure
Robert Baird McClure (November 23, 1900 – November 10, 1991) was a Canadian physician, medical missionary, and the 23rd Moderator of the United Church of Canada. He is notable for his extensive work in medical missions across various countries and his leadership within the church.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Robert Baird McClure was born in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. He pursued his medical education at the University of Toronto, where he earned his medical degree. McClure was deeply influenced by his family's strong Christian faith and commitment to social justice, which guided his future endeavors in medical missions.
Medical Missionary Work[edit | edit source]
McClure's medical missionary work began in 1923 when he traveled to China to serve as a medical missionary under the auspices of the United Church of Canada. He worked in various regions, including Henan and Sichuan, providing medical care and establishing hospitals. His efforts were instrumental in improving healthcare access in these underserved areas.
In addition to his work in China, McClure also served in India, Palestine, and Gaza. His work often involved not only providing medical care but also training local healthcare professionals to ensure sustainable healthcare development.
Moderator of the United Church of Canada[edit | edit source]
In 1968, McClure was elected as the 23rd Moderator of the United Church of Canada, the first layperson to hold this position. During his tenure, he emphasized the church's role in social justice, international development, and ecumenical relations.
