Robert Oxnam

Robert Oxnam is an American author, China scholar, and former president of the Asia Society. He was born on October 2, 1939, in White Plains, New York. Oxnam is known for his expertise in Chinese history, culture, and politics.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Robert Oxnam attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He later earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, where he studied Chinese history and literature. Oxnam continued his education at Yale University, obtaining a Ph.D. in Chinese history.

Career[edit | edit source]

Oxnam's career has been focused on promoting understanding and cooperation between the United States and China. He served as the president of the Asia Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening relationships between Asia and the United States. Oxnam has written several books on China, including Ruling from Horseback: Manchu Politics in the Oboi Regency, 1661-1669.

In addition to his work in academia and diplomacy, Robert Oxnam has been open about his struggles with mental health issues, including dissociative identity disorder. He has written about his experiences in his memoir, A Fractured Mind: My Life with Multiple Personality Disorder.

Oxnam's contributions to promoting cross-cultural understanding have been widely recognized. He has received numerous awards for his work in the fields of international relations and cultural exchange.
