Under his leadership, the brewery grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest and most technologically advanced breweries in the South by the late 19th century.
Portner was an innovator in the brewing industry. He was one of the first brewers in the United States to adopt mechanical refrigeration, allowing him to produce lager year-round. This technological advancement gave him a significant edge over his competitors and contributed to his brewery's success. Portner's brewery was also known for its extensive distribution network, which utilized the railroads to distribute beer across the southeastern United States.
