Robert Reischauer is an American economist and public policy expert. He is best known for his tenure as the director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and his contributions to public policy and economic analysis.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Robert Reischauer was born on September 7, 1941. He is the son of Edwin O. Reischauer, a prominent American diplomat and scholar of Japanese history. Reischauer earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and later received a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University.

Congressional Budget Office[edit | edit source]

Reischauer served as the director of the Congressional Budget Office from 1989 to 1995. During his tenure, he was known for his nonpartisan analysis and efforts to provide accurate budgetary and economic information to Congress. His leadership at the CBO was marked by significant contributions to the understanding of the federal budget and economic policy.

Urban Institute[edit | edit source]

After leaving the CBO, Reischauer became the president of the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank focused on social and economic policy research. He served in this role from 2000 to 2012, where he continued to influence public policy through research and analysis.

Medicare Payment Advisory Commission[edit | edit source]

Reischauer was also a member of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), an independent agency that advises Congress on issues affecting the Medicare program. His expertise in health policy and economics made him a valuable asset to the commission.
