Romainmôtier-Envy

Romainmôtier-Envy is a former municipality in the district of Orbe, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It was first mentioned in historical records in 814 as Romanum monasterium. The municipality was located in the Orbe district.

Romainmôtier is home to a Cluniac abbey church, which is one of the oldest in Switzerland. The abbey was founded in the 5th century by Saint Romain. In the 11th century, it was rebuilt under the influence of Cluny. The church, dedicated to Saint Peter, is a notable example of Romanesque architecture. The abbey was secularized in 1536. The buildings were used as a source of construction material. The church was preserved and became the Reformed parish church.

Before the merger, Romainmôtier-Envy had a total area of 8.9 km2 (3.4 sq mi). Of this area, 4.46 km2 (1.72 sq mi) or 50.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.79 km2 (1.46 sq mi) or 42.6% is forested.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Romainmôtier-Envy has a population (as of December 2020) of 464. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (87.7%), with German being second most common ( 4.5%) and English being third ( 2.3%).

Heritage sites of national significance[edit | edit source]

The Cluniac Priory Church with Romanesque capitals in the cloister is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
