Rongeur

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Rongeur is a medical instrument used in surgical procedures. It is designed to gouge out bone, allowing surgeons to access areas under the bone structure. Rongeurs are often used in orthopedic and oral surgery, as well as neurosurgery.

Design and Function[edit | edit source]

The rongeur has a sharp-edged, scoop-shaped tip, which is used to bite into and remove small chunks of bone. The instrument is typically made of stainless steel and comes in various sizes and shapes, depending on the specific surgical need. The handle of the rongeur is designed to provide a firm grip, allowing the surgeon to control the amount of force applied.

Types of Rongeurs[edit | edit source]

There are several types of rongeurs, including:

  • Kerrison Rongeur: This type of rongeur has a footplate that allows the surgeon to protect soft tissue while removing bone. It is often used in spinal surgery.
  • Rouge Rongeur: This rongeur has a double-action handle that provides increased leverage, making it easier to cut through dense bone.
  • Stille-Luer Rongeur: This rongeur has a slender design, making it ideal for reaching into tight spaces.

Usage in Surgery[edit | edit source]

Rongeurs are used in a variety of surgical procedures. In orthopedic surgery, they are used to remove bone spurs or reshape the bone to improve joint function. In oral surgery, they are used to remove bone during tooth extractions or to shape the jawbone for dental implants. In neurosurgery, they are used to remove bone around the spinal cord or brain to relieve pressure or to create space for the insertion of medical devices.

Care and Maintenance[edit | edit source]

Like all surgical instruments, rongeurs require proper care and maintenance to ensure their longevity and effectiveness. This includes regular cleaning and sterilization, as well as periodic sharpening of the cutting edge.
